A brand-new house feels like a fresh start, and it is easy to assume the locks are fresh too. In practice, a lot of people have handled the keys to a new build before you get them. If you bought a newly built home in Timnath or elsewhere in Northern Colorado, here is what to look at in the first few weeks.

Who might already have a key

During construction, keys and codes can pass through builders, subcontractors, cleaners, inspectors and sales staff. Many builders use construction keying systems that are meant to be retired at closing, but you cannot easily confirm that on your own.

Rekey, do not just replace

New-build hardware is usually in good shape, so there is often no need to buy new locks. Rekeying changes the pins inside so only your new keys work, and you can have every exterior door keyed to the same key.

Garage and keypad codes

Reset the garage opener and clear any remotes you did not receive. If the home has a keypad or smart lock, remove every existing code and set your own.

Check the deadbolts and strike plates

Builder-grade strike plates are often held with short screws. Longer screws that reach the framing make doors much harder to force open.

Do not forget the extras

Mailbox locks, side gates and any exterior storage closets often come with keys you may never have been given. Replace or rekey what you cannot account for.
