    Eastern vs. Western Massage

My approach to massage is more Western based. Meaning that it is based on Western concepts of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Western massage works on various parts of body, such as the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system, for the purpose of realigning and restoring the whole system. It combines five basic strokes: effleurage (gliding), friction, percussion (tapping), petrissage (kneading), and vibration.

The other main approach to massage is Eastern based. It is more focused on energy flow and balance within the body. Stimulating and soothing specific points along the energy meridians to create effects at other sites along those meridians.

Crissy Athorp, LMT, BCTMB, NASM-CPT & CES

I am licensed in the state of WI #11907-146 and Board Certified from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

My interest in pursing massage as a career started one day while I was giving my husband a back massage. He casually suggested I look into massage school. It peaked my interest and after a little research I found myself enrolled in school part-time. That became the official start to my love for massage therapy, and fascination with human anatomy and kinesiology. My training was completed over two years at Fox Valley School of Massage in Appleton, WI. The summer between classes I spent studied with the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Certified Personal Trainer. I have been licensed since 2012 and my experience includes spa, chiropractic, and independent settings.

When I am not busy with massage, I enjoy spending my time with my family. My hobbies include; Pinterest projects, scrapbooking, and running. I have completed one full marathon, many half marathons, and two sprint distance triathlons. A half Iron-man might be on my bucket list.
