Chinese lanterns mean something dissimilar to everybody. For those abroad, they can mean the arrival to a Chinese restaurant. For those in China, they can mean the end of the Chinese New Year. Occasionally they are just streamers. No matter how you look at them, those beautiful, bulbous lights have a clear start, entrenched in practicality and ritual worship.
