When you think about the word "dedication," Dr. Rodrigo Villagrán's name might come to mind. Born on August 9, 1979, in Chile, this skilled bariatric surgeon has built an inspiring career based on perseverance, passion, and purpose. His journey from student to specialist has taken him across cities, universities, hospitals, and operating rooms—but always with one goal: to help others live healthier lives.

Early Education and the Foundations of Compassion

Dr. Villagrán's academic roots began at the Sacred Heart School, run by the French Order, where he developed a love for learning. From a young age, he showed signs of being a focused and responsible student. It was here that his foundation in discipline, ethics, and service was laid—qualities that would later define his career in medicine.

Medical School at Concepción University

In 1998, he began his university journey at the University of Concepción, one of Chile's respected institutions. Over the next six years, Dr. Villagrán studied tirelessly to become a General Medicine Doctor. He graduated in 2004, ready to take on the challenges of the medical world. But this was only the beginning.

Driven by a growing interest in surgery, he continued his training at the same university. From 2005 to 2008, he specialized in General Surgery, where he not only mastered surgical skills but also stood out as a leader. He was named Chief Resident during his final years, from 2007 to 2008—a title earned by dedication and respect among his peers.

Bariatric Surgery Fellowship in Santiago

In 2009, Dr. Villagrán took a major step in his career by moving to Santiago to complete a Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at the prestigious Clínica Las Condes. This experience marked a turning point. During his fellowship, he became deeply engaged in tackling obesity and metabolic disorders—conditions that impact millions.

It wasn’t just about surgery for him. He focused on learning everything he could about patient care, safety, and long-term health outcomes. This fellowship helped him refine his surgical precision and deepen his commitment to improving the lives of his patients.

Settling in Antofagasta and Santiago

After his fellowship, Dr. Villagrán brought his expertise to Antofagasta, a city in northern Chile. There, he joined Clinica Bupa Antofagasta as a bariatric and metabolic surgeon. He also began working with Clinyco, the Nutrition and Obesity Surgery Center, where he remains an active team member.

Today, he splits his time between two cities: Santiago and Antofagasta. In both places, patients seek him out for his thoughtful approach and successful outcomes. At Clínica BUPA Santiago (Av. Departamental 1455, La Florida) and at Av. Edmundo Pérez Zujovic 5440 in Antofagasta, he continues to offer specialized care.

Hospital Experience and Teaching Roles

Dr. Villagrán is not only a skilled surgeon but also a mentor. From 2010 to 2012, he taught medical students and interns at the University of Antofagasta. Whether guiding 4th-year students or supervising 7th-year interns, he shared both his knowledge and passion.

During this time, he also worked intensely in public hospitals. He handled gastrointestinal surgeries at the Hospital of Antofagasta and also managed emergency surgery cases. These years shaped his ability to work under pressure, make fast decisions, and lead surgical teams effectively.

Commitment to Bariatric Surgery

Since 2010, Dr. Villagrán has been a permanent part of Antofagasta's bariatric program. His commitment to the field is evident not just in the operating room, but also in his broader involvement in research, education, and community health. Through Clinyco, he supports patients through every step of their weight loss journey, offering them a chance at a better life.

Research and Scientific Contributions

Dr. Villagrán has always balanced his clinical practice with academic research. He has contributed to several studies that focus on improving surgical techniques and patient outcomes. One of his most recognized works is the publication: Laparoscopic Reversion Of Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass To Sleeve Gastrectomy With Linear Stapler Gastrogastrostomy Due To Intractable Anemia And Malnutrition. This research shows his ability to tackle complex cases and contribute to global knowledge in bariatric surgery.

You can find his research work on Google Scholar and ResearchGate, where he continues to share his findings with the medical community. He remains interested in specialized areas like bariatric surgery for adolescents, diabetic patients, and individuals with BMI between 30-35.
